**29/04/23 - 'Modern Interpretation of Historic Corsets'**

Since leaving Little Hands Design, Helen has developed a career in costume making for theatre, with a focus on historical costumes and tailoring. Having worked on costumes for Les Mis and been a tailor at Glyndebourne Opera House, Helen is no stranger to the fashion and design world. 

This session is based on the cyclical nature of fashion, and how historical corsets influence contemporary clothing. Following a brief introduction to the world of corsetry you will learn more about corset construction, and practise some of the fundamental techniques to make your own corset belt.
No prior knowledge necessary.

**20/05/23 - 'Japanese Mending'**

“The holes in our clothes are the stories of our lives!’ The first date, an unforgettable holiday, or just a day out with friends; the clothes we wear store our memories, and their value goes far beyond the retail price tag. Come and learn how to embellish little stains, holes, rips turning them into a design detail! The beautiful ART of Japanese mending is so therapeutic and, once you know how to do it, can be done ‘on the go’. 

Participants can practise on sample swatches or bring in clothes in need of some TLC, and will leave with a ‘Japanese Mending Kit’. (Donations to our charity’s bursary scheme welcome!)

**24/06/23 - 'Urban Graphics and Identity'**

‘Fusing my Indian heritage and growing up in Britain, I use fashion as a device to communicate social activism. I want to proudly celebrate South-Asian women with a sentiment that all ethnic minorities can relate to. Diversity is always important to me.’ 

In this experimental session we will explore our identities and search for ways to visualise them in a graphic way using the work of our alumni, and conceptual graphic artist Nikita Vora, as inspiration. Participants van either design and make a crop top, work on applied swatches or bring in light clothes to work directly on these. Participants are asked to bring in pictures, photos etc related to their heritage! 
No prior knowledge necessary for kids (8-18years) and adults.

Classes can be booked singularly for each month's ticket, or booked as a bundle of three.

Tuesday Crochet Club – 5:30-7

 

We are delighted to welcome back our Lilyella, fashion designer and alumni of Little Hands Design. She can’t wait to share her love for youthful crochet design with young budding designers during this weekly yarn & crochet bonanza.

 

Get ready to explore the exciting world of crochet fashion. Alongside creating, we'll dive into other aspects of this creative field. You'll work with a variety of materials and learn techniques that will empower you to express your unique sense of style, and create loveable yarn plushies, known as Amigurumi!

 

Throughout term you will not only hone your crochet skills, but build a cool selection of handmade accessories and plushies to take home. Get ready to step into spring with a some fun yarn buddies, and a wardrobe that reflects your individuality and creativity. Students are also encouraged to ‘Customise with Crochet’ their pre-existing clothing once they have a hand on the basics.

 

If financial support is a concern, we believe in making this experience accessible to all. Please note we run a bursary scheme for low income families (evidence required) and a scholarship scheme for high ability students (with a supporting statement from their schools).

In this captivating course, you'll learn how to develop your own unique dress sense and become a responsible designer, maker and consumer. Through practical, hands-on activities, you'll dive into the world of fashion and learn how to design and make clothes and accessories. But that's not all – we'll do it all while being mindful of our impacts on the environment.

We're incredibly fortunate to have the support of leading fashion brands, who have kindly donated their industry waste materials of the highest quality. This means you'll have the opportunity to experiment and create with materials that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Throughout the term, you will become familiar with the sewing machines, essential to clothing construction. We will also explore the art of mending, altering, and thrifting, giving new life to old garments. You will learn about the life cycle of clothes and become a socially conscious influencer, making informed choices about your fashion consumption.

The class will introduce you to new technologies aimed at reducing the impact of fashion on the environment. This exciting learning opportunity is perfect for students aged 8-18 who have a keen interest in fashion and a desire to unleash their creativity in a mindful way.

If you're working towards completing your Duke of Edinburgh "skills" (from age 12+ yrs), this workshop is an excellent choice. You will not only gain valuable fashion skills but can also continue with us for your "volunteering" (from age 14+ yrs).

I had never used a sewing machine before and here I am 6 weeks later with a completed wearable kimono style jacket and I absolutely love it. Signing up to the classes with Little Hands Design was the best decision I have made for investing into myself. Astrid's way of teaching allows for everyone else in the class to also help and share their own ways of learning. By my final class I was also able to help a fellow class mate and it was the best feeling!
